The Genius of Play Holds Inaugural Expert Panel on “The State of Play in America”

April 4, 2017 | A diverse group of child development experts, play experts, and toy professionals gathered on March 30 in New York City for a lively discussion on the importance of incorporating play into children’s daily schedules. “The State of Play in America” panel was hosted by The Genius of Play, the Toy Industry Association’s (TIA) research-backed initiative to bring more play into kids’ lives, and was held at the Children’s Museum of Manhattan.

The discussion was moderated by Dana Points, former editor-in-chief of Parents magazine and American Baby magazine. The panelists, who each contribute unique perspectives to the topic of play, included:

  • Dr. Erik Fisher, PhD, emotional dynamics expert and author;
  • Nancy Shulman, head of the early learning center at Avenues: The World School in New York City;
  • Leslie Bushara, deputy director of education at the Children’s Museum of Manhattan; and
  • Kim McCall, executive director of Playworks NY/NJ.

The two-hour session covered the overall importance of play and its developmental benefits, and key issues faced by parents, caregivers, educators, and policymakers inhibiting children from participating in more play.

Panelists were also asked to grade America on play. “Children know how to play – [they get an] ‘A,’” says Shulman. “It’s the adults that get a ‘C.’ We’re getting in [the] way,” according to Shulman.

The panel also discussed safety issues, the role of technology, and what it means for kids to have a balanced mix of play. A question-and-answer session following the presentation allowed audience members to ask questions and share viewpoints on various play topics.

“The Genius of Play experts at the event provided great insight into the developmental benefits of toys and play,” says Ken Seiter, TIA’s vice president of marketing communications. “Play is integral to our children’s health and wellness and the diverse group of experts on the panel – as well as those sitting in the audience –  really highlighted this. This event is the first of many that we hope to host regarding this important topic.”

In the coming weeks, The Genius of Play will be making more information available through a report based on the expert panel that will be released to the media, professional organizations, and industry professionals and will be available on online.
